Goal-Gradient Effect
Effort increases as a visible goal gets nearer, and artificial early progress accelerates the whole journey.
Definition
Originally observed by Clark Hull in animal learning (1932), the goal-gradient effect describes accelerating effort as distance to a reward decreases. Kivetz, Urminsky and Zheng (2006) demonstrated it in consumer behaviour, including the endowed progress variant where starting people partway along increases completion.
Established research. Originates in published research and has been replicated. The effect is real. Its size in your product still needs measuring.

The endowed progress finding
In the Kivetz study, customers given a twelve-stamp card with two stamps already applied completed it faster than customers given a ten-stamp card with none, despite both requiring ten purchases. Perceived progress, not actual remaining work, drove behaviour.
This is the most directly usable finding in the area, and it explains why setup checklists that pre-tick 'created your account' outperform ones that start at zero.
Applying it without lying
- Credit steps the user has genuinely already completed, such as verifying their email or creating the account.
- Show remaining steps rather than an abstract percentage, so progress is verifiable.
- Make the last step the easiest one, since that is where motivation is highest and friction is most costly.
- Break long journeys into visible sub-goals, each with its own completion.
In practice
Pre-credited setup checklists
SaaS onboardingA five-item checklist that opens with 'Account created' already ticked starts the user at twenty percent honestly, and measurably improves completion of the remaining items.
Progress towards free shipping
EcommerceShowing the remaining amount needed for free delivery raises basket size. It also raises returns when the threshold pushes people into items they did not want, so measure both.
