Spacing Effect

Learning spread over time is retained far better than the same amount of learning crammed into one session.

Definition

First described by Ebbinghaus, the spacing effect is the finding that information is retained more durably when study is distributed across time rather than massed. It is one of the most reliably replicated findings in cognitive psychology.

Established research. Originates in published research and has been replicated. The effect is real. Its size in your product still needs measuring.

Consequences for onboarding

A single onboarding session that explains twelve things teaches roughly none of them. The same twelve introduced across the first two weeks, each at the moment it becomes relevant, is retained.

This is the research argument against front-loaded tours, and the argument for contextual, progressive introduction of capability.

Applying it

  • Introduce one capability at a time, when the user first encounters the need.
  • Reinforce a concept the second and third time it becomes relevant, briefly.
  • Keep any single teaching moment to one idea.
  • Space feature announcements rather than batching them into a release note nobody reads.

In practice

Progressive onboarding

SaaS

Introducing collaboration features on the day a second person joins the workspace, rather than during first-run, matches the teaching to the moment of relevance and to spaced learning at once.
