Mere Exposure Effect
Repeated exposure to something increases preference for it, which is why redesigns feel wrong before they feel right.
Definition
Robert Zajonc (1968) demonstrated that repeated exposure to a stimulus increases liking for it, even without conscious recognition of the exposure. The effect is strongest for initially neutral stimuli.
Established research. Originates in published research and has been replicated. The effect is real. Its size in your product still needs measuring.
The redesign implication
Initial reactions to a new interface are contaminated by unfamiliarity. Users who dislike a redesign on day one frequently prefer it by week four, and the reverse also happens: a design that tests well as a novelty can wear badly.
This is why longitudinal measurement matters more than launch-day sentiment, and why first-reaction surveys after a redesign should be read as a measure of change, not of quality.
Working with it
- Measure after two to four weeks of use, not on day one.
- In testing, expose participants to a design more than once before asking for preference.
- Do not over-correct based on immediate reaction to an unfamiliar layout.
- Recognise that competitors' conventions have exposure advantages you cannot match by argument.

Post-redesign sentiment curves
Product changeSentiment typically dips at launch and recovers over weeks. Reacting to the dip by reverting confuses unfamiliarity with a usability failure, which is a measurable and separate thing.
